Yorktown Athletic Club, Girls Softball

We are happy and proud to announce that the Yorktown Athletic Club has finally
received approval from the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services EMS Division to deploy AED's. This has been a long ongoing process and we were required to meet many different steps and policies. For those of you that may not know what an AED is, it stands for Automatic External Defibrillator and is a device can be used for someone young or old that is in cardiac arrest.

There are risks associated with the various sports we run from football, lacrosse (that are contact sports), softball and baseball (where children have been hit by balls) to name a few. Unfortunately in other areas of the State and Country, some of these children have died as a result of these injuries to their chest and heart. Additionally we have a lot of family and friends that watch our children compete in these sports and there may come a time where they too are in need of medical assistance.

Thanks to the efforts of Mark Vercruysse, the YAC Lacrosse Program and those that helped run a successful Murphy Tournament, the YAC has been able to purchase 17 AED's. These machines will be assigned to various trained coaches throughout the year. We are also looking into purchasing additional machines in the near future.

Congratulations to Karen Madelena, one of the YAC Cheerleading Coaches who successfully completed the required training. Karen has been assigned one of the first machines and additional machine will be assigned to the other cheerleading coaches as well as the football coaches. As we get into November, we will be re-assigning and training the basketball coaches and continue on into the Spring with Lacrosse and hopefully baseball and softball.

This is a huge step for YAC as we are now one of the few local athletic programs in the County that has an AED program. The various Sport Commissioners will be in touch with their respective coaches about this program.

Hopefully we will never ever need to use these machines on any of our children, family or friends at any of our events. However, it is good to know that we now will start to have these machines at these events should they be needed.
